7 Organizing Tips That Really Work
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Let’s face it – we are all busy people. Our jobs, our kids and family, the kids’ after school activities, and more really add up to consume the largest portion of our day. So when you do find some time to sit down and relax at home, you do not want to have to spend the bulk of that time cleaning up things so you actually have a place to sit. Organizing the house sounds like a pain in the you-know-what, but if you stop to think about it – leaving the house unorganized is more detrimental in the long run. Having a well-organized home is a good goal for many reasons. If your home is uncluttered, you will find it easier to relax and let the stress of the day go. You will spend less time trying to hunt up a winter hat, a stray glove, your lost keys, or that important piece of mail, because everything will have a place to live, and you will know right where to find it. Of course, none of that will work if you do not first actually get started, so we have compiled a few tips t help you out: 1.) Start a system in the entryway. We will define “entryway” as whichever door you use the most – whether that’s the front door, the back door, the door leading from the garage…whatever. The most commonly used entryway in the home is usually the place where junk tends to pile up the most. If you implement an easy to use system for everyone that passes through with their various armfuls of items, then they can just as easily put things away as they can dump them on the floor or nearest flat surface. Try some bins or baskets for shoes, hooks for outerwear, a bowl nearby to put keys in, another basket for mail you need, and a small trashcan to immediately dump any junk mail or garbage. 2.) Clear out the kitchen cupboards or pantry. This also applies to fridge, if the fridge needs it. We have a tendency to overlook dry goods in our cupboards or pantry, and everyone has those stray canned items that no one eats and you can’t remember why you bought them in the first place – so now is as good a time as any to clean it out. Make three piles: items you will use, items that you will not use but are still good for donating, and items that no one can use because they are old. Throw away the garbage, donate the items you can, and put the good stuff back in. Don’t forget to make a list of what you need to replace. Same goes for the fridge! 3.) Clear out your closets. This works almost like the pantry, except now we’re talking about sweaters and old shoes. Again, three piles: stuff you wear, stuff that you don’t wear but you can donate, and stuff no one can wear. Deal with the piles accordingly. 4.) Tackle the home office. Even if your home office is just a desk that you pay bills at, it will still benefit from some organization. Assemble what you think you’ll need – file folders, boxes, bins, labels – and then get to work. Begin sorting through your paperwork. Important things like receipts and things you need for taxes should be filed away safely. Unpaid bills should be left in view so you do not forget about them, so put those in a bin or basket on the desktop. Any paid bills, bank statements or credit card statements you no longer need should be disposed of – but properly! Shred them! And then, of course, all your junk mail can be tossed out. 5.) Designate specific places for specific things. You can eliminate a lot of running around and hunting around if there is a place to put things like library books and backpacks. Instruct everyone in the home to use those places, and cut out a lot of hassle in your daily life. 6.) Watch like a hawk. Keep an eye out for the places in the home that seem to attract the most stuff. Depending on what kind of stuff that is, implement some ways to keep it contained, whether it’s baskets for winter hats and gloves or shelving for books and magazines. 7.) Make a new rule and stick to it – for every new thing you bring in, bring an old thing you do not need anymore out. Donate it, give it to someone who can make use of it, or throw it away - it doesn’t matter, as long as you are preventing more clutter from creeping back in. With a little determination and elbow grease, you can cut down on the clutter in your home, making it more organized, and therefore making your life run that much more smoothly, no matter how busy you are.
