Avoid Blowing Fuses with Holiday Decorations

By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply

Oh, yes, the holidays and that special neighborhood arms race that leads many a seasonal decorating expert waddling around precariously up on the roof! Please consider this year to be the first in which you stay off of the roof!

Also, take some precautions and be sure to apply that safety first approach to the erstwhile task of avoiding blowing fuses with your holiday decorations. Nothing can dampen holiday cheer and merriment like an electrical fire, after all! Whether you do end up again on the roof or are just twisting light-filled cords around a tree, the first rule of thumb is to read all the enclosed instructions thoroughly.

Additionally, if you’re going to use them again next year, remember to save those directions as well. Also, be certain that your decorations contain a UL listing on the box. Even if they are UL listed, be sure to inspect all your decorations for potential fuse blowing and fire starting, frayed or bad wiring. Be careful not to overload extension cords and turn off the power if you’re not going to be home for a while and during your long winters nap. Nothing will blow a fuse quicker than an overloaded household electrical circuit, so be good for Santa and double check your fuse box and circuit breakers to see what fuses are on what circuit.

You should also add together the total wattage ratings to make sure they are lower than the amount allowed on the extension cord. If that’s confusing, I bet you know someone who can explain it and help make sure. In addition to staying off of your roof, don’t attempt to repair any frayed or broken electrical decorations without proper instruction.

Remind the little elves that yanking out a plug by the wiring instead of the rubber gripper is also very dangerous with holiday decorations. These safety steps will prevent blowing fuses especially your own. Trust me--blown fuses and overloaded circuits are even worse than coal in a stocking! Besides, the only fire engine you want to see during this special time of year is the one giving out free candy and presents to all!
