Choose and Install the Floor of Your Dreams
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Well maybe you don’t exactly dream of floors but if you love your home and you’re planning on a major remodeling project then the floors have got to be one of those things on your mind. Obviously you want just the right flooring to compliment the rest of your home as well as fit your budget. But there are so many choices, where do you start? Probably the best place to start is with the room where you want the new flooring. Some rooms such as kitchens and family rooms are considered high traffic areas and you’ll want something more durable but other rooms like master bedrooms or guest rooms have less traffic and are great places for that luxurious carpeting you’ve had your eye on. Once you pinpoint the room and the amount of traffic and general use it will get, you need to ask yourself a few questions. What are your personal tastes and what is the over all style of your home? Do you want to completely replace your existing flooring or simply cover it up? Are you looking for durability or luxury or maybe a combination of both? Next have a look at your options in materials. There’s a lot to choose from. Linoleum and Vinyl: These two types are usually considered budget flooring options and both can come in either no-wax styles or those that need regular waxing. The vinyl comes in both tiles and sheets. Tiles may be easier to install in that you’re working with smaller more manageable pieces but if you’re concerned about spills you might want the seamless quality of the sheet vinyl. The nice aspect of the tiles is that they can do a pretty good job of mimicking some of the more expensive flooring types including wood, marble or terra cotta. Laminate or synthetic hardwood flooring: These look like the real thing but most laminate flooring is made of high density water resistant fiberboard with an image of natural wood on the top. This has a special resin coating that makes it almost indestructible. This type of flooring is ideal if you want a durable floor but without the cost or hassle of hardwood installation. Laminate flooring is resistant to moisture and stains. It never needs waxing, sealing or refinishing. Hardwood: Every one loves hardwood floors. It comes in a variety of woods most commonly oak, pine and cherry and stained an array of colors to suit almost any home style. Hardwood flooring comes in tongue and groove which is solid wood strips that fit tightly together, parquet, which usually consists of wood tiles made up of geometric shapes and engineered which consists of a veneer of exotic or costlier wood laminated on a common less expensive wood. All these wood flooring types come a range of stain colors. Ceramic and terra cotta tiles: Ceramic tiles are machine made tiles that are fired in a kiln. They can be either glazed or unglazed. Ceramic tiles are fairly strong and easy to clean. Terra cotta tiles are usually the typical brick or other natural earth colors and can be machine made or handmade. They aren’t as strong as some other types of tiles and will need regular maintenance and sealing. There are so many other types of flooring including marble, natural and manufactured stone, cement, cork, bamboo and of course probably the most popular, carpeting. If you want luxury under your feet, you can’t beat quality carpet and padding and it comes in an unbelievable array of colors. Whether you dream of gorgeous floors or simply want a practical and easy to clean surface under your feet, your choices are virtually endless. |
