Earth-Friendly Bedroom Basics
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Almost everyone who has watched the news or any type of TV programming for that matter has heard of the “green” movement. The idea of being “green” is to find environmentally friendly ways to go about your daily life. This could be as simple as using reusable earth-friendly grocery bag or as complex as remodeling your house to incorporate “green” features. Remodeling your house to include “green” features can range from installing new energy-efficient windows to installing solar panels to heat the house. While a lot of these remodeling projects take a lot of time and money, there are small improvements you can make to your home to embrace the “green” movement and do your part to be more environmentally friendly. Once you have decided that you want to make your home more environmentally friendly it is time to decide where you would like to start. If you are on a tight budget then the bathroom or the kitchen may be out of the question. In order to get more environmentally friendly appliances and energy efficient features it will cost a lot of money, therefore a living space such as the family room or a bedroom may be the best place to start. There are many different ways to improve the earth-friendliness of a bedroom, you just have to know where to look and what resources are available. The first step to achieving a “green” bedroom is to use low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint on the walls. Most paints available release VOCs that can have an impact on the air quality of the house for many years. By using low VOC or no VOC paint you are removing this environmental factor. These particular paints can be found at most home improvement or paint stores and the price is comparable to traditional types of paints. When looking for low VOC products make sure to read the labels and compare them to other products to ensure that they are in fact low VOC. Another element of the bedroom to look into is the flooring. If you are a fan of hardwood flooring bamboo is a great option to stay with the “green” movement. Traditional hardwood floor material such as Oak has a growth period of 80 years and is therefore not very environmentally friendly. Bamboo on the other hand does not have as long of a growth period because it regenerates in three to five years. This material also lasts just as long as oak and is very low-maintenance. In addition to paint and flooring, you can also make your bedroom “green” by choosing to install ceiling fans as opposed to an air conditioner. Air conditions are on of the least environmentally friendly appliances available because they require a lot of energy to run. Ceiling fans are a great alternative to air conditioners and require very little energy to run. Fans can be installed in pretty much every room to help save energy. While they many not allow you to totally do without an air conditioner, fans help to circulate the air so that you do not have to use the air conditioner as often. So not only are you staying environmentally friendly, but you are saving yourself money on your electric bill as well. |
