Finishing Touches to Your Remodeled Bathroom
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Remodeling your bathroom can be a headache, both figuratively and literally. Once the hard labor of ripping, cutting, sawing, replacing and fixing are finished, it is now time for fun! Adding a few finishing touches to your bathroom gives you a chance to create a relaxing, serene environment, or can even be a place for you to show off your passions. Follow these tips to add just enough “you” to any bathroom remodeling project. Tip #1: Paint Like a Pro Unless you enjoy your plain, white-washed walls, go bold and paint your bathroom. If you do not wish to commit to a full room paint makeover, why not just paint one wall? Creating an accent wall is a great way to create a focal point in the bathroom (away from the toilet, that is) and allows you to try your hand as a painter. Purchase painter’s tape and create a split tone wall, with a dark, rich color waist level and below. Complete the look by painting the wall waist level and above with a lighter shade or complimentary color. Painting isn’t just for the walls, however. If you’ve got storage shelves that seem plain, spice it up by painting a few designs. This works even on glass! So if you want to add that floral print you’ve always dreamed of throughout the room, you can! Tip #2: Think Vertically Many homeowners don’t consider all the space available in their bathroom. Look at your ceiling; is there extra space between the ceiling and the next lowest fixture (track lighting, mirrors and cabinets)? If so, consider adding your own personal style in these spaces. If you’re a fashionista, amateur photographer, or souvenir collector, show it off! Hang pictures, paintings, knick-knacks and other “you” items to give your bathroom a personalized feel. Not only will this give your bathroom a design boost, it will also help de-clutter the other areas of your home that you’ve used to store these items. Tip #3: Get the Spa Treatment Whether it’s your personal bathroom or a guest bathroom, why not make it comfortable for every user? By adding just a few layers here and there, you can create an enjoyable environment. Plush throw rugs and extra soft hand towels are just the beginning; add a soft pillow for your bath tub, or a padded toilet seat to make your next visit a bit more relaxing. For the multi-tasker, install a television on a swivel unit so you can watch whether you’re applying makeup or soaking in the tub. Likewise, for singers, add a waterproof shower radio to help spice up your next shower. Tip #4: Keep it Clean Whether you’re a household of one or home to a small army, keeping your bathroom smelling fresh and clean can be a challenge. Installing toilet bowel sensors will help eliminate any stains or water marks that can appear over time without having to scrub after every use. Similarly, keeping the bathroom counter tidy and free of stray hairs, extra toothpaste and other substances can be difficult. While you can’t control how dirty the sink gets on a daily basis, you can ensure that all toothbrushes remain clean. Sleek, stainless steel tooth brush sanitizer units are ideal for any home; these units are so compact, they don’t take up much counter space and will save you from constantly replacing toothbrushes. Tip #5: The Nose Knows The scent of bathroom is its first impression, so make it a good one. From fragrant shampoos, conditioners and bar soaps to hand sanitizers, it’s important to keep the scent light and clean-smelling. When you are purchasing soaps, keep the scents similar; providing too many competing smells will overwhelm any nose. If odors are a particular problem, buy flameless candles or aerosol air fresheners to help you and any bathroom visitors keep the smell pleasant.
