General Skylight Information
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
There’s probably no better way to enjoy an astral view of the heavens than through a skylight in your ceiling! Skylights have a refreshing and dramatic positive effect on the light, color and roominess of your home. Whether it’s adding sun to a drab bathroom, illuminating some gourmet activities in the kitchen or cheering up an attic, skylights are incredible room mood changers. They also provide far more light than windows and in fact tubular versions are often the only option for bringing in additional light to a “landlocked” bathroom. Speaking of windows, skylights are also rated for thermal efficiency, so be sure to check prior to purchase. There are further economic benefits, as well. Newly invited sunlight can naturally warm up a room and its surfaces in the winter. During the summer, ventilation from a skylight allows trapped warm air to flow out and subsequently cool things down, especially your heating and air conditioning bill! Skylights will eventually pay for themselves, but getting started will typically cost between one to five thousand dollars depending upon the needed materials and installation procedure. Generally the bigger the skylight and more advanced the functionality, the higher the overall cost involved. Skylights come in different flavors and are most often made of plastic or glass. They can be fixed or operable as well as flat or domed. Of course, there are numerous variables to consider--most importantly, where you’re going to put it. You’ll want to consult with a professional who can help you not only in determining materials and installation but also the size and specific features based on your needs and intentions. One often overlooked component is the need to switch the “off button” of your skylight if it’s too bright. The good news is that there are blinds and shades available which are great for stemming heat loss at night which is actually a strange winter’s sky phenomenon. One thing’s for sure when it comes to skylights; there are billions of stars above and since we’re hurdling through space, why not install a skylight and see some of the truly amazing sites along the way?
