Getting Started: 10 Steps to a New Kitchen

By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply

Remodeling a kitchen can seem like a big project; however it does not have to always be that way. There are many different ways to remodel a kitchen and it can be as extensive as gutting the whole room and starting from scratch or as simple as updating the cabinet handles and door knobs. So, here are a few simple steps to help you get the kitchen you are looking for:

1. Evaluate your use for the kitchen. Is it a place where the family gathers to help make dinner or something that is more for show and rarely used? Finding out its purpose will help you find out how the remodeling the kitchen will best suit your needs.

2. Set a budget. Evaluate your financial situation to find out how much you are willing and able to spend on a remodel. This will dictate the type of updates you will be able to make in order to stay within your budget.

3. Find a contractor. If this is going to be an extensive kitchen remodel and not a simple change to oil rubbed bronze cabinet hardware, it is best to seek a contractor to head up the project. However, a contractor may not be needed if the remodel is not as extensive.

4. Update the cabinets. The cabinets are one of the most prominent features in the kitchen. One way to update is to simply surface the cabinets with new paint or wood stain. You can also add oil rubbed bronze cabinet pulls to accessorize the cabinets.

5. Replace or refurbish the countertops. In addition to the cabinets, the countertops are also a big focal point in the kitchen. Look for something that is updated and durable to enhance the look of the kitchen, while also being practical by taking into consideration how much it will be used.

6. Refinish the flooring. Ceramic tiles are very popular choices when it comes to remodeling a kitchen. There are numerous sizes and colors to take into consideration when choosing tile. It is best to get samples from the flooring distributor to see what will look best with the cabinets and countertops.

7. Replace the appliances. If you are looking to increase the value of your home, replacing the appliances in a kitchen is money well spent. Not to mention that you will also enjoy cooking on a new stove or storing your food in a new refrigerator.

8. Update the lighting. If there is not a lot of natural sunlight flowing into the kitchen, then it is important to update the lighting. Adding track lighting can brighten up the room and add a little cheer to the kitchen.

9. Paint the walls or add a colorful backsplash. Many individuals choose to go with paint because it is inexpensive compared to other alternatives. However, others choose to add a tiled backsplash to the kitchen to accentuate the floor and countertops.

10. Add a kitchen island or other features. If you have enough money in the budget then you can add luxury items such as a kitchen island or built in wine refrigerator. These accessories are not necessary but can add value and interest to the kitchen.

All of these tips can help you get the kitchen that you want at a price that you can afford.
