Green Remodeling Ideas for the Kitchen
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
The environment has been in the news a lot lately. Seems like everywhere you turn, you are being admonished to “go green” to help save the planet and reduce the negative impact our modern way of life is having on the world around us. But if you have not yet heeded that call, it may be time to do so now…starting with your kitchen! Remodeling your kitchen to make it green not only makes sense for the environment, but it makes sense for your bank account, too, and it is a lot easier to accomplish than you might think. Many of the changes made to help a home or area of a home to be more environmentally friendly focus on making it more energy efficient. When your home is more energy efficient, then that translates to less money you are shelling out each month on your utility bills. It’s simple as that! Going green is particularly effective in the kitchen, since it is usually the most energy intensive room in your home. Perhaps the simplest way to make your kitchen more environmentally (and bank account!) friendly is to swap out your current appliances for new, energy efficient ones. Energy Star rated refrigerators, ranges, ovens, and more that have been manufactured in recent years can make a big dent in your home’s energy consumption, and the newer the appliance, the better it will be at conserving energy. If do you this, do not forget to recycle your old appliances or donate them to the local Goodwill or Salvation Army if they are still in good repair, and, if it is possible, when you install your new appliances, keep the fridge as far from the oven as possible. The fridge needs to keep things cold and the oven needs to heat things up – having them both trying to do their respective jobs right next to each other means they have to work harder to get it done, and kind of defeats the purpose. If you are looking to do a bigger green makeover than just swapping appliances, then you have a ton more options. Adding more windows to your kitchen will cut down on the amount of electrical lighting you need to have to work. Any windows facing south will require shades or awnings to block the afternoon sun to keep the room from heating up too much in the warmer months of the year, and when you do need to use those electric lights, get the long-lasting energy efficient light bulbs that will work for years on very low wattage. It doesn’t stop there, though - you can get great new counters that are environmentally friendly by choosing ones made from recycled materials like marble, tile or even paper, and as a good finishing touch, when you go out shopping for food to put in your new, greener kitchen, try to shop for organic foods that are locally grown. Purchasing these foods help support local farmers, they have no toxic pesticides or fertilizers all over them which makes them better for you and your family, and less fuel is used up getting them from the fields to your dinner table. You’ll be sitting down to a lovely dinner while you do your part for the planet.
