How to Arrange Your Furniture
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Home, sweet home. It’s a place to come home to after a long day at work, a place to cultivate relationships with family members and friends, a place you look forward to relaxing and enjoying. But not every home has comfortable furniture or even an inviting atmosphere once you enter their home. Follow these tips to arrange your furniture and optimize the space you have. Plan Ahead Make a list of the rooms you’d like to reorganize. For each of these rooms, measure the dimensions of the room as well as the dimensions of the furniture pieces you currently have in the room—including heights of lamps, candles and hanging wall art. Create a paper blueprint of each room, with a scaled down version of the dimensions of each room. For each sofa, couch, chair, table or other item, create a corresponding cut out. This way, you’ll be able to try out various combinations before lugging heavy furniture from one corner of the room to another. Bonus: Be sure to denote where electrical outlets, cable lines, light switches, windows and doors are located, allowing ample space to open and close doors and cabinetry. Focus, Focus, Focus Evaluate the purpose and function of each room and brainstorm what you’d like the focus of the room to be on, which can vary from the television, a fireplace, chandeliers or even an interesting art piece. For rooms that may serve multiple purposes, section off spaces according to the desired function. Rooms designed for entertaining—such as family or living rooms—should include ample “free” space to move around furniture for entertaining guests. For the television and movie watchers, arrange the furniture in an arc a safe distance away from the television. Contrarily, to create a comfortable conversation space, be sure to keep furniture within a close range of each other, allowing those seating to converse without straining to hear others. Additionally, be sure to add end tables to hold drinks and small food items. For avid readers, be sure to provide enough light—both natural and store-bought. Bonus: Dining rooms should include enough space between the chairs and walls to make an easy exit from the table, without struggling to squeeze behind other chairs. Keep the Flow No matter who is in your home, your furniture should create a natural traffic flow, keeping your family members and guests moving through each room. Therefore, do not place couches or other large objects in front of a door or you’ll create a traffic jam. Instead of setting up furniture side by side, try facing pieces next to each other, ideally away from the walls; centering items gives a cozier feel and adds extra space to move. Unconventional but stylish furniture arrangements focus on not keeping furniture flush with the walls. Bonus: As an alternative, position sofas at a non-perpendicular angle, while keeping area rugs or tables parallel to the wall. Start Large Moving heavy furniture pieces back and forth can be overwhelming, especially if you’re arranging your furniture alone (that’s why we plan ahead!). When you’ve decided and committed to your new arrangement, start with the largest pieces first. Then, move additional smaller pieces around the larger item; you’ll simultaneously create a focal point in your room and arranging the rest of the room will seem less daunting without that 300 lb sofa recliner staring you down. Bonus: Be aware of lighting; dark objects shine best in natural light. Be Unique Sometimes adding an artistic flair to a room can transform the mundane to marvelous. However, a room stuffed with mismatched furniture is just an eyesore. Use interesting arrangements (asymmetrical designs) and lines to move the eyes throughout the room; vary heights of accessories. Add something unique that reflects your personality and your family; it will serve as a conversation piece and a reminder that this is your home. Bonus: Be sure that all wall décor and throw pillows match the style, theme and feel of a room.
