How to Decorate a Foyer
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Do you remember your first interview for your very first job? Or do you recall meeting your significant other’s parents, hoping that they too will like you? First impressions usually create lasting impressions—so you wore the business suit to impress your potential boss, and plastered a smile on your face before you met the intimidating father or nervous mother of your latest crush. Like an interview or a meeting, your front door is your home’s first impression; it is the first room or area of your home that visitors and family members encounter. It too should be decorated in an inviting style, welcoming all who arrive to your doorstep. Role Play As a homeowner or renter, you may have never considered what the exterior of your home “says” to onlookers. Step out (literally) of your comfort zone and act as a guest arriving at your home. Examine your front door and doorstep first. Are there any cracks in the paint? Does the doorbell function and do old door knobs need replacing? Next, enter your foyer and check for other unsightly infractions such as out-dated decorations, cobwebs, leaves, dirt and clutter. Examine Adjoining Rooms Some homes have smaller foyers that are more of a small area than a room in and of itself. If this is the case, pay particular attention to the surrounding rooms in your home that are visible from this area. Note the rooms or corners that you can see, especially if that includes the kitchen sink. A sink full of dirty dishes and soaking pots doesn’t exactly say “Welcome” as much as it does say “Help!” Out with the Old When you role played as a guest, replace what you disliked or felt was unwelcoming or unbecoming of your home, starting with your door hardware. By simply replacing cabinet fixtures with satin nickel cabinet knobs, you can transform dingy-looking areas to a more polished, clean look. Go Bold While many designers may instruct homeowners to use bright colors to try to make your foyer seem bigger, it may not be worth the time and energy. If you do have a small space, use it to experiment with a wallpaper pattern you love, or invest in a rich, dark paint. Since your foyer is not as large as other rooms in your home, you can afford to try out a style that may seem overwhelming in larger dimensions. Show Your Passions Even if you’ve boldly chosen to decorate with a tiger print wallpaper, you still must add decorations to your foyer. Start by thinking about what you love to do. If you’re a blooming photographer or passionate violinist, consider mounting related objects such as black and white still-lives, or small models of instruments. It’s not uncommon for most homeowners to accrue antiques, hand-me-downs and other items. If you’ve got a unique heirloom or chandelier, dust it off and show it off! Even if you’ve got low ceilings, a fancy chandelier will draw guests’ eyes upwards, and create a sense of history within your home. Camouflage Storage Space If you’ve used the foyer as an additional storage area, don’t try to hide it. Instead, dress it up to match the rest of the foyer’s feel and style. By adding satin nickel cabinet hardware such as drawer pulls and knobs to an otherwise plain cabinet unit instantly changes the feel of the piece. Explore the various finishes and colors of cabinet hardware that match your décor the best such as antique copper, oil rubbed bronze, iron, weathered nickel, satin pewter and polished brass. Be Welcoming Who doesn’t love flowers? Brightly colored, fresh flowers are inviting, pretty and serve as a quick go-to conversation starter if need be. If allergies are a problem, fake silk flowers work just as well as the real thing and do not require constant maintenance, saving you time and money in the long run.
