How to Freshen Up Your Bathroom
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
The bathroom in your home is arguably one of the most important rooms in the house. Since you must necessarily spend a good portion of your day in that room, it makes sense to want to make it as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Regardless of your budget, if your bathroom hasn’t had an update in a while, you will certainly find the time you spend in there more enjoyable if you freshen up the décor. There are many different approaches you can take when you redo the bathroom that range from simple, easy and inexpensive to more involved and more costly. Before you start, you will need to decide what your goals are. How do you want your new bathroom to look and what things do you absolutely need to change in it? Changing major things like the tub or shower stall may be out of the financial cards right now, but you can still get a whole new look without going that far (or that expensive) by changing cosmetic things and focusing on the details. So what are the things that really need to go? If you have one of those older medicine cabinets on the wall above your sink – you know the ones, they’re often made of metal and have a mirrored door – you can drastically change the look of your bathroom just by pulling it down and replacing it with something else. One option for a replacement is to get a nice wall mirror with a pretty frame that complements the color scheme of the rest of the room. You can make up for the storage space inside the medicine cabinet that you lose by adding a basket, decorative bin, or cupboard to move the toiletries and other items into. The framed mirror idea will also work if you don’t have a medicine cabinet but have one of those frameless bathroom mirrors that are held to the wall with clear plastic hooks. In fact, that is an even easier change to make – just grab any frame of similar size that strikes your fancy that is similar, whether you get it from an antique store, local thrift shop, or a department store, and hang it up over the mirror. You now have an instant new focal point for your bathroom. Perhaps you want to get rid of that old light and fan combo that is currently crouching in the middle of your bathroom ceiling, in order to replace it with a new and more elegant light fixture. You can add more lighting touches by providing a softer light source in the bathroom, perhaps near the bathtub, to create a more relaxed ambience when you need it, and use the overhead light for tasks that require brighter light. Once you have the larger things under control, it is time to work on the details. Hanging framed art is a great idea but sometimes too much the obvious choice. Instead, hanging more mirrors around the room – try a cluster of smaller mirrors in varying sizes, with frames similar in material or color to the one you’ve used over the sink – to create the illusion of more space. Tie things together with new towels, shower curtains and rings, and rugs in similar color palettes or patterns, and as the perfect finishing touch, change all of the cabinet hardware to something new and different. You can choose shiny chrome for a sleek, modern look, or go with something like oil rubbed bronze cabinet pulls and cabinet handles for an elegant look. When you swap out other things like your doorknobs and locksets for new ones that match your new cabinet hardware, you will end up with a look that is really pulled together and fresh. These are just a few of your options for easy ways to freshen up your bathroom. The key to getting a sanctuary you love and can relax in is to be creative, use your personal style and flair to make it really stand out and fit your tastes, and pay attention to the details, for the details are what will elevate the room from something nice to something extraordinary.
