How to Install a Ceiling Fan
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
A ceiling fan is a great way to supplement both the heating and cooling systems in your home. It is the ideal device, because it can boost the ability of your furnace to keep a room warm and your air conditioner to keep a room cool without you having to shell out more in the way of electricity. With the rising numbers we are all seeing on our utility bills, the ceiling fan is a small change to make that can make a big impact where it counts most – your wallet. With that in mind, how do you go about getting a ceiling fan installed? Fortunately, the installation is straightforward, and a project you can accomplish yourself (or with a little help) in one afternoon. Here’s a step by step on how to do it: 1.) Take down the existing light fixture. Obviously, if there is no existing light fixture where you want your new ceiling fan to go, you will need to cut a hole in the ceiling and run electricity to it. But for our purposes, we will assume you have a fixture there already. Before you remove the old light fixture, make absolutely sure that the electricity to it is turned off before you remove the screws that hold the fixture to the ceiling. Once the fixture is off the ceiling, twist the plastic connectors at the ends of the wires to disconnect them from the ceiling. 2.) Take out the old fixture’s electrical box. A regular light fixture’s electrical box is not strong enough to support a ceiling fan, so you need to exchange it. This may mean you need to cut a new or bigger hole in the ceiling to fit the new box in, but you can also find fan supports that are specifically designed to fit into the normal sized hole, so you don’t need to cut. 3.) Install the new electrical box. Now you need to feed the electrical cable into the box, before you push the box into the hole in the ceiling. Seat the box firmly against the joist in your ceiling and screw it in. You will see a bare copper wire, and that wire needs wrapped around the grounding screw inside the box. 4.) Affix the ceiling plate. If your fan came with a “ceiling medallion” (a big round decorative plate that will cover any holes in the ceiling), attach that before moving on to the ceiling plate. After holding the ceiling plate up against the ceiling, pull the wires down through the hole in it, and then screw the plate into the ceiling. 5.) Put the fan together. For this step, refer to the instructions that came with your particular fan to find out how to put it together correctly. While most ceiling fans share a general basic set-up, it is always best to use the factory-provided instructions that came with your fan. 6.) Connect the wires. After you assemble the fan, take it up to the ceiling and connect the wires using twist-on wire connectors. This will usually involve joining two green wires to the bare copper wire, and then connecting the two white wires and the two black ones. After you’ve done this, you can screw the fan onto the ceiling. NOTE – If your wires are not green, white, and black, it is best to consult an electrician before proceeding. 7.) Attach the blades and lights. Now your fan installation is nearly complete – last up, attach the blades and lights to the main component screwed into your ceiling, again following the instructions provided by your fan’s manufacturer. And you’re done! Give your new ceiling fan a test drive and enjoy! |
