How to Install Cabinet Hardware
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Changing the hardware on your cabinets is a great way to instantly spruce up the way a room looks, whether the cabinets are found in the kitchen, the bathroom, the laundry room or elsewhere in your home. This is an easy project that you can tackle and finish in one afternoon – unless we’re talking about an industrial sized kitchen or something, of course! But regardless of the room or its size, you will want to keep a careful eye on what you are doing so you don’t make any mistakes you can’t fix. “Measure twice and cut once” is an old adage that is used in carpentry, and this is just as applicable here when you are removing and replacing the old hardware on your cabinets. With that in mind, here is a simple “how to” guide for you to follow for your cabinet hardware makeover! 1.) The first step to take is to take stock of your current hardware. Inspect each cabinet that you intend to make changes to and make a list of which ones have knobs, which ones have handles, how many screws are needed for each piece of hardware, and which ones belong to which cabinets for reference both as you shop and when you go to install the new stuff. 2.) Pieces with only one screw are the easiest to change and pieces like handles that have two screws will only be slightly more difficult if you plan to keep the holes as they are. If you do, measure the distance between the two very carefully, because you will need to pick new hardware that matches in order to avoid drilling new holes. 3.) Now it’s time to pick your new hardware. Here’s another time when you will find online shopping is more convenient than going out to a store – if you second-guess any of your numbers or measurements, you only have to go back to the cabinets to double-check, rather than having to drive back home from across town! 4.) With your new hardware in hand, it’s time to get to work. Remove your old hardware first, whether you take it all off at once or do it cabinet by cabinet. If your new hardware matches up with the old holes, then you’re done at this part. If it does not, then you will need to drill new holes. To make that easier for you, use a guide, like the popular MeasurePro Templates, to make sure the holes are all in the same spots on each cabinet. 5.) Install the new hardware. Make sure everything is secure and tight, and lining up how you want it to. This is the time to make any changes that you may require, before moving on to the last step to finish up your new cabinet hardware installation. 6.) If you had to drill any new holes and old holes are exposed, fill them in with wood filler before you refinish the cabinet. You will likely not need to refinish if you did not make new holes. And you’re done! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the great new details you’ve added to your room by installing new cabinet hardware.
