How to Make Your Home Inviting
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
How to Make Your Home Inviting Have you ever wondered why some homes feel more inviting than others? Or how you could make your own home a comfortable haven? An inviting home is about more than just living space. It’s what you bring to that space in terms of your own personality, tastes and life experiences. Creating a warm and inviting environment can be easier than you think. Have a look at the colors you use in your home. They can affect not only the way you feel about a room but they can also affect your mood. Some colors actually have the ability to make people uncomfortable while others can make some one feel like that want to sit down and stay awhile. Investigate your current wall colors and see what they’re saying about your home. Get rid of the old and dingy. Shabby chic really doesn’t work anymore. Clean, pick up the clutter and wash the fingerprints off the cabinets. While you’re at it remove the outdated cabinet hardware and replace it with new hinges, drawer pulls, and cabinet knobs. Choose cabinet hardware in warm tones like oil rubbed bronze. Lighting Can Set the Mood Lighting can make all the difference in how your home feels. The wrong lighting can make a room feel cold or dark and dreary. If you have just one ceiling light in a room consider replacing it with a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are so popular because they bring instance ambiance to any room. Also add table lamps and pole lamps to create warm pools of light. Take a look at your lamp shades. If they’re bright white they can make a room feel cool. Use lamp shades in creams or taupe to provide a softer and more inviting light. Add plants. Using plants can create a warm homey feeling. Plants and cut flowers are a fairly inexpensive way to soften any space. If you don’t have a green thumb, try using silk plants or flowers. They’ve come a long way since those blue plastic roses. Pick up a bunch of fresh cut flowers at the grocery market on your way home if company’s on the way. Add a Lot of Personal Touches Display small groupings of collectibles. If you collect something, show it off. It will say a lot about you and it’s a way of sharing a bit of yourself with others. Put your favorite things in a lighted curio cabinet or on the fireplace mantel. Use fabrics. Fabrics add a warm and welcoming atmosphere to any home. Accessorize with lots of throw pillows, curtains and rugs or carpeting in warm colors. Stack the throw pillows on the sofa for a warm cozy look. While blinds tend to create a clean and modern feel, curtains or draperies are what add the soft and inviting quality. If you come to a point where you’re simply lost for ideas, check out some home decorating magazines. What images seem so inviting that you want to walk right into the picture? Look at all the little details, the throw placed across the back of the sofa, the layers of cozy pillows. What kind of cabinet hardware can you see? Take these ideas and make them your own It doesn’t take a lot to make your home feel inviting. It’s the little touches that count, from adding cabinet knobs that reflects your personal tastes, to selecting a ceiling fan to help create the perfect mood. Remember that an inviting home is really all about the qualities that you bring to it, your own personal touches that create an inviting home. |
