How to Polish Stainless Steel
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
How to Polish Stainless Steel What do your pots and pans, cabinets, splash guards, appliances and utensils all have in common? Many of them are made of stainless steel. Homeowners across the nation choose to stainless steel due to its durable, virtually rust-proof material. Additionally, the luster of this material can double as a decorative finish to your home. But like most things in your kitchen, stainless steel also must be polished in order to maintain its shiny appearances. Follow these professional-quality polishing tips, and your stainless steel home hardware are guaranteed to be streak and grim free. Tip #1: Evaluate Your Cabinet Hardware Glance around your kitchen and note spots where your stainless steel cabinets or appliances may seem dull or stained. Oftentimes, spilled water, over-heated sauces and grease splatters can unknowingly turn once shiny surfaces into tarnished, weathered cabinetry. Be sure to also examine the cabinet knobs and handles that may be discolored due to natural oils produced by your hands or from greasy finger foods. Tip #2: Get the Supplies Before you break out the electric buffer, be aware that some materials and solutions can actually damage your stainless steel cabinet hardware. To avoid scratching any surfaces, use soft clothes and towels, and never use any pads or scrubbing brushes that will scratch the surface. Be sure your cleaning solutions do not contain chlorine; try to find a mixture that does include ammonia. Tip #3: Use the Free, Natural Cleaning Solution Smaller spots and signs of aging may be easily fixed with, believe it or not, water. With a cloth soaked in warm water, buff out any stains or spots; be sure to dry immediately with a fully dry towel or cloth to prevent any future water spots or drip marks. Tip #4: For Tougher Jobs If water doesn’t quite finish the job, use a gentle glass cleaner, preferably a solution that includes ammonia. But before you run out to purchase an expensive magic solution, there are some solutions around the home that are said to work polishing wonders. White vinegar or cider vinegar is a little-known at home remedy that quickly removes heat stains, water spots and otherwise dirty stainless steel-- if you can stand the smell long enough to work with it! With a soft cloth, pour out enough solution to moisten all the surfaces you wish to clean; using long strokes, rub the stains away with continual sweeping strokes. If white or cider vinegar does not completely polish your cabinet hardware, other solutions including club soda, baking soda or olive oil. For sensitive noses, create a paste with equal parts baking soda and water to achieve an odor-free shine. Whatever product you do try, always apply a cloth soaked with warm water. Tip #5: Proven Prevention Methods Rinsing your cabinets, hardware, appliances, countertops and even flatware is a great preventative measure to ensure you won’t have those annoying water or heat spots. When loading the dishwasher, be sure to separate the stainless steel flatware from silver pieces. Stainless steel pots, pans and other cookware can easily get hot or heat spots caused by overheated burners or pans boiling dry. Hand-wash these items and be sure to polish the cookware dry immediately upon cleaning to avoid water spots or streaks. Dishwashers often leave streaks, soap residue and even bluish tones. Your kitchen is the heart of the home; from cooking, enjoying family meals, helping with homework, or used as a make-shift stage for performances, your family spends a majority of their time in the kitchen. Making sure your stainless steel home accents—such as cookware, flatware, utensils, appliances and other surfaces—are polished and clean can not only help transform the look and feel of a room, but also cut down on germs, grim and dirt buildup. With this tips in mind, you’ll be able to see your face in virtually ever surface in your kitchen!
