How to Reupholster a Couch

By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply

If you have found a piece of furniture that has good structure but are not crazy about the finish, all hope is not lost. To update the look of your couch, you can reupholster it. In all honestly, reupholstering a piece of furniture is not easy. American musician Jack White practiced the trade full time for years before making it in the industry. When interviewed on the subject, White stated that upholstery "is a dying trade".

If you have the time and the willpower to attempt this endeavor yourself, you must first measure all of the dimensions of your couch. Once you figured out how much fabric you will need, select a high quality fabric or material that can withstand the daily wear and tear of a couch for years to come.

Along with fabric for this project, you will also need synthetic padding to replace and strengthen the structure of your sofa. Also have on hand a colored pencil, a staple gun, and a sewing machine.

After you have removed the material from your couch, be sure to check the structure. Check all springs and see if any need to be replaced and make sure they are all tightened. If the cushions themselves are worn down, cover with batting to secure the base. If the cushions are in good shape they can be reused.

Lay down a large piece of fabric and trace out the shape you will need to staple onto the structure. Take a colored pencil and trace out the material needed. Be sure to leave about an inch of space around the perimeter to fold under when attaching the material to the structure.

Once you have cut out the shape of the material needed, take a staple gun and staple the material to the structure. You will want to pull the material taunt so it does not gather; but not too tight so that it does not tear. Continue to do this with all of the pieces of material you have cut out until you are finished.

After the main structure is fully covered and redone, the rest is a cinch. Cut out pieces of material for your sofa cushions. Once cut, use a sewing machine to sew together the pieces to make slip covers for your sofa cushions. After you have finished sewing together each cushion, sew in a zipper at the side to allow for easy access to the slip covers. This gives you the option of taking the covers off for cleaning.

While this project may be tedious and time consuming at times, there is a certain sense of pride that is felt upon completion. You may have an easier time with this project if your couch is more contemporary and has clean lines; more ornate pieces mean more cuts, and more work.

If the design allows for it, you can even add an extra element to the look of your couch by tufting. Tufting is an old world practice that involves the use of long needles, thread, and matching buttons. After threading the needle and deciding where to place the button, pull the thread through the material to the point that the button sits back into the material. Practice on a pillow first to see the effect of this look.

Now that you have finished reupholstering your couch, you can fool yourself into thinking that you have a new piece of furniture. Because of the work involved in this process, you may want to limit this option to quality pieces of furniture that you wish to hold on to for a long time.
