Keep Trees and Shrubs Healthy in Cold Weather
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Many homeowners spend hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars to get the perfect landscaping for their house. Curb appeal is a very important element of any house, especially when you are looking to put it in the market for sale. For anyone that lives in the northern section of the United States, they know how hard it is to keep the landscape look beautiful through out the year because of the harsh weather conditions. Frost and snow in the winter are not kind to the many types of plants and flowers that make up the landscaping surrounding a house. Two iatrical elements in any landscaping project are trees and shrubs. While most people think that once winter roles around they can stop caring for the trees and shrubs in the yard, it is still important to make sure that they stay healthy in the cold weather. The trees may look like they are still striving and healthy, however, the cold weather can damage the trees and shrubs. It is important that you prepare for the cold weather and protect your trees to ensure that they survive for a long time. Landscaping, especially trees and shrubs can cost a lot of money, so it is important to make sure you do everything you can to protect your investment. While it is true that trees are dormant during the winter, they still require water and other necessary maintenance to keep them thriving. One way to prepare your trees and shrubs for the cold weather is to use mulch around the tree. The composted mulch that surrounds your tree helps to retain water and decrease the temperature differences in the ground. By placing mulch around the tree in the fall it serves as a cover and helps to protect the trees roots during the harsh winter weather. Mulch is relatively inexpensive and can be found at any home and garden center or home improvement store. It is also important to water the tree if weather permits because water is just as important in the winter as it is in the summer. One thing to keep in mind is that if the ground is frozen then the water will not penetrate the ground and can cause more damage, so when you go to water the plant make sure that the ground only cold and not frozen. In addition to keeping your plants save, you also want to make sure that the people living inside your house, as well as visitors are save when they walk under or around the trees in your house. Heavy snow and ice can damage trees and cause branches and limbs to split or break. This can cause damage to your house as well pose a potential hazard to individuals that walk around these trees. One way to prevent the trees surrounding your house from posing a potential hazard is to protect the base of the branches by wrapping them with a plastic cloth, burlap or other material. By warping the tree branches, it prevents extreme temperature changes and protects the branches from the accumulated snow and ice. Another way to ensure protection is to take the necessary precautions before the snow and ice hit by pruning the tree. When you prune a tree you dispose of dead or damaged branches, therefore making the surrounding area safer because the existing branches are less likely to give way to the snow and ice. It is also healthier for the tree because once all the damaged and dead branches are removed the tree has more room to grow.
