Keeping Kids Safe in the Kitchen
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
In most of today’s homes the kitchen is the heart of the house and for many families with growing children it is the most used room as well. For this reason, it’s important to give special attention to keeping your kids safe while in the kitchen. The average kitchen can present a lot of potential dangers for small children, but with some careful thought and planning you can avoid many of the hazards that can face children while playing in the kitchen. Here are ten tips to help you keep your little ones safe from kitchen mishaps: • Keep breakables such as glasses and china in cabinets or even pantries or cupboards that you can lock. • Remember to keep potentially dangerous cleaning products out of reach or locked away. Some cleaning liquids are especially attractive to kids because the pretty colors look like they might be good to drink. • Keep knives and other sharp or pointed kitchen utensils in a closed drawer. The same goes for small electric appliances such as hand mixers or blenders. Keep in mind that small children learn by watching you and they can quickly learn to plug an appliance into a wall socket. So keep appliances out of reach and under lock and key if necessary. • Do not place glass food jars, knives or containers of hot food at the edge of the counter or table top. Don’t use a table cloth or even placemats on the kitchen table. A toddler can grab the edge and pull the entire contents down on themselves causing serious injury or burns. • Designate a “safe play” cabinet. This is a lower cabinet that’s filled with pots, pans, lids, wooden spoons and all sorts of safe kitchen gadgets and odds and ends where your child can explore and play to their hearts content. Add new things from time to time to keep it interesting. You’ll probably find they have little interest in getting into the “danger zone” areas of the kitchen. • Whenever possible do all your cooking on the rear burners of the stove. It may be inconvenient at times but it’s well worth the added safety. Remember to keep all pot handles facing toward the back of the stove so their out of reach of little hands. • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Make certain it is an extinguisher specifically designated for kitchen fires and install it away from potential fire hazards. You don’t want to be reaching over or past a fire to reach the extinguisher. If the fire is larger than an extinguisher can handle, exit the house with your child immediately and call 911 from a neighbor’s home. • Never leave children unattended in a highchair. Most highchairs should have safety belts. Always fasten your child in the chair even when you are close by. • Never stand over your child while drinking hot coffee or tea or try to drink coffee with one hand while holding the baby in the other. Also don’t have any hot drinks while feeding your child and keep all hot beverages out of reach. • Don’t place a child on the counter, washing machine or any other surface where there might be a danger of falling. You might think it’s ok because you’re right there in the same room but a child can fall in a split second and no matter how fast you might be it’s usually never fast enough. Remember that as warm and inviting as our kitchens may seem, they are also full of dangers for small children. Take a look at your own kitchen to determine what you can do to make it a safer place for your littlest family members.

This is great advice especially for folks without kids. I would add one thing, keep the fire extinguisher OUT OF REACH. I did have a fire extinguisher but it was within easy reach under the sink. My nephews were over a few months ago and you can guess what happened. It took forever to clean up.
