Kick Up the Glam in Your Holiday Décor

By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply

‘Tis the season to decorate! Admittedly, decorating your home—both inside and out—can be overwhelming. Visions of tangled strings of lights and broken, treasured ornaments may haunt you. But decorating this year can be simple! All you have to do is decide what areas of the home you’d like to spice up for the holiday season.

Make a Good First Impression

Since the foyer the first area your guests, out-of-town relatives and friends will see, it’s important it is properly decorated. Decorating this area of the home, however, does not mean cramming a string of 300 lights into a small area. What it does mean is to pick a few tasteful designs you like. Many homes show off their popularity by hanging a piece of colorful ribbon and attach received holiday cards and greetings. The ribbons can be easily attached to the back of your front or back door.

Spice Up the Bathroom

The second best place to decorate is the bathroom. Why? Most, if not all, of your visitors (in addition to those that live with you) will frequently use the bathroom over the holiday months. The easiest way to decorate your bathroom is counter-intuitive. Instead of hanging garlands or lights, simply suggest the holiday season with a comforting smell. Holiday favorites include gingerbread, cinnamon, vanilla, sugar cookie and evergreen.

Display the Artwork

Your kitchen is perhaps the easiest place to decorate for the holiday season, especially if you have children. Their homemade artwork is perfect to hang on your appliances. For homeowners who enjoy more traditional decorations, explore your backyard for inspiration. Collect a few small twigs and gather into a bundle; tie a brightly colored ribbon or sash around the twigs and hang over doors or on mantle pieces. If you have extra jars and vases, tie a ribbon around them and add a few sprigs of greenery from your lawn. Or, if you don’t mind spending a few dollars, purchase some festive holly and pine cones to create a great kitchen table centerpiece.

Another simple idea is to string together cookie cutters. Cut a generous amount of string, wire or ribbon. Between each cookie cutter, tie knots on each end to prevent them from sliding into one another. Hang above the sink, island or other countertop.

Dine in Simple Style

When it comes to the holidays, your family and guests probably anticipate the delicious feasts the most. Decorations, therefore, should not be overwhelming or competing with the dressed goose or seven courses of fish. Simple decorations are a great solution. Purchase or empty a glass or frosted glass bowl or vase. Fill the vessel with shiny ornaments. To finish it off, tie a ribbon around the neck of the item and for an easy, sparkling centerpiece!

Hang With Care

Your family room or living room is the perfect room to traditionally decorate. Most families use this room to arrange Christmas trees or other larger holiday decorations. To create a cozy environment, hang stockings (whether purchased, made out of construction paper or are worn every day) over your mantle piece. As a treat to your family, stuff the stockings with candy canes or other small goodies.

This room is the perfect area to (finally) hang your garlands. Intertwine the greenery with white or colored lights and string accordingly. Cover up any fasteners by hanging bows, ribbons or ornaments over the hooks, tape or nails.

Dress the Windows

If you’ve got some paper and scissors, create snowflakes! These easy-to-make, virtually penniless decorations are great to dress up your window. For a more elegant look, place electric candles in each window that faces your street. Be sure to set these candles on timers so you don’t cause accidental fires or leave them on all night.

Now it’s time to get into action! Choose one or multiple rooms to decorate, follow these guidelines and have a festive, stress-free holiday season this year!
