Kitchen Safety

By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply

In most homes kitchens are the center of the action, but due to the nature of cooking and food preparation, it also is the scene for the highest percentage of household accidents. So when it comes to safety, you can never be too careful!
Whether there are small children who live in your home or potential curious guests, there are several good cautionary measures everyone should take.

One example is when storing hazardous cleaners in kitchen cabinets under the sink, safety locks can be installed behind fancy doors opened by even the most contemporary of cabinet handles.

It’s also a good idea to unplug all appliances and keep
their cords out of reach when not in use. There have been recent upgrades by many appliance manufacturers who now offer child proof switches.

A well protected kitchen storage area may be a good idea, as well. A protected pantry offers a safe place to keep sharp knives and even things that may not immediately come to mind, such as common saw edged aluminum foil boxes.
Keep in mind you never have to sacrifice the “look” of your kitchen for safety. In fact, elegant door knobs and lock sets are available in safety first pantries. Now that’s a win-win situation in any home!

Safety measures need not be expensive. Locks and safety hinges are a low cost, high return investment. Fasteners can easily be placed on places where knives temporarily hang out such as on dishwasher or even refrigerator doors.
When cooking, some common sense ideas include using back burners and a stove-top guard. Make sure oven knobs are out of reach and microwave are secured and not accessible by the little ones.

As Shakespeare would say, if safety in the kitchen is the food of love, then cook on!
