Perk Up a Bleak Winter Garden
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
If you are a gardener, winter does not have to be a time for hibernation. Even though most flowers won't bloom in the cold winter months, especially if you live in the far north, there are still plenty of options for growing a winter garden of sorts. Now there is no need to go stir crazy while waiting for spring to come. Even in winter, there’s still productive ways to stay active in your winter garden. Of course, most flowers are on holiday in the north but there are some interesting and perky options. Try planting some winter growing favorites such as broccoli, asparagus and salad greens. As hardy as these healthy vegetables are naturally, you can help them out by building a wall to block out a bit of old man winter! Other plants that seemingly enjoy the cold are fern bushes and evergreens. With their unique greens and bright red berries is there anything more seasonal or colorful at Yule Time? Don’t forget to add some special garden ornaments! Of course nothing says protection from nature’s harsh elements like a greenhouse. You may be picturing a big commercial structure but the fact is you can have your very own little greenhouse in your backyard that will not only brighten up the winter’s day but also offer you some splendid things to transplant out into direct nature come springtime. Back outdoors, take advantage of winter to take a little inventory on your garden. You can do things like define your paths with mulch or remove a plant that may have been a little to abundant last summer. Others ideas include ruminating on adding or replacing “inanimate” garden mainstays such as trellises and bird baths. Also consider your outdoor furniture and flower pots and do some painting if need be. Think boldly ahead for the spring! Now there may not be an over abundance of wild growth in your winter garden, but if it’s not too cold why not go out and get some fresh winter air and feel those ideas for spring rush into your head? Think about the plethora of plant and vegetable options and appreciate the cycle of life. Begin planning ahead during the bleakness of winter for the promise of springtime in the meadow and in your garden. The fresh winter air will do you good and remember out there that the oak sleeps in the acorn. Just make sure your gloves and bonnet are snow proof!
