Saving Money During a Kitchen Remodeling
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Today we’re going to focus in on major appliances as we look to save you money during your kitchen remodeling. Heck, we’ll even throw in the kitchen sink! The key to making the right decisions is to think through what your needs are in this epicenter of living known as the kitchen and to think in terms of long-term savings. Dishwashers are a great place to start since they do good things like eliminate stacks of dirty dishes and also save water and energy. You’ve probably never taken the time to think about what features are necessary or important in a dishwasher. But doing this can cut down on your overall cost since you’ll eliminate unneeded features despite how “space age” they may seem. When it comes to garbage disposals, for the most part, the higher the price, the better the unit and warranty. Prices range from about $100 to $500 and warranties run up to ten years so be sure to do a little due diligence. One thing for sure is that investing in adequate horsepower is never a bad idea. Environmentally speaking, garbage disposals have positives and negatives. They help minimize the amount of garbage created, but this requires a lot of water and sewage treatment. Another idea is to make the effort to compost applicable scraps. Just think, you’ll create a wonderfully fertile garden while you’re at it! Now, what are we going to cook with, you ask? There are certainly a lot of options to choose from here such as ovens, stoves and commercial ranges. Of course you need to determine if you want gas or electric. These days technology makes both heat sources smart options. Though gas is typically more economical than electric power, it is similar to electric, however, they have gas burners, gas valves, and require a connection to a gas pipe, so be sure to consider all of those variables before making a decision. As alluded to above, this is about everything and the kitchen sink. Don’t look to minimize “features” here. A cheap sink is made of thin metal and will actually indent and scratch very easily. They can also be hard to clean and make an irritating noise when water is running onto it. So choose a good quality thick sink since it is sure to get a ton of use. Thickness of stainless steel sinks is measured by gauge--just ask the dealer. A good rule of thumb is that 18-gauge or thicker is the way to go and they also look good. Of course doing some comparative research is an excellent idea when it comes to saving money and getting first-rate quality kitchen remodeling. When shopping, do a search for reports and ratings. Lastly, extra years of warranties and parts are something that can help in saving you long term. You’ll be glad you took a few extra minutes and extra bucks at the end of your purchase to secure!
