Shower Safety: Simple Steps to a Safe Shower
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Whether you decide to take a shower in the morning to help you wake up or at the end of the day to help you relax, you deserve to shower in a bathroom that is both safe and stylish. You may not know be aware of it, but a home bathroom can be one of the most dangerous rooms in the home if it lacks adequate safety features. Here are a few ways to safety proof the room while keeping it looking modern and fresh. There are a few ways to prevent slips and falls in the shower area. The most effective way would be to install a shower safety bar. A shower safety bar can be installed at any angle; the key factor is to make sure it is installed properly so it can work the most efficiently. Safety bars are available in any color and finish to match your bathroom décor. Another way to prevent falls is to install any kind of slip grips on the floor of your shower or tub. There are more options than the regular old shower mat these days, including long lasting materials that match the décor of your bathroom. When used in conjunction with a shower safety bar, the level of safety is raised significantly. If your tub is on a platform and sits higher up off the ground, consider installing a set of stairs that would lead up to the tub. A raised tub could provide problems because the homeowner could miscalculate the height and overstep, thus resulting in injury. A stair or two can help prevent this from happening, while also adding value to the room overall. For added convenience in your shower, install a handheld shower head. The beauty of a handheld shower head is the freedom it gives you in the shower, resulting in less movement. This option is best for people who have trouble moving around as much. A handheld shower head is also good for caregivers who are there to assist a homeowner. While this item is not limited to the shower, it is a good idea to have in the bathroom for home owners who cannot move around as well: a raised shower seat. A higher seat means that you would not have to sit as low to take care of business; thus, making it easier to get up once finished. If you are shopping for any floor or area rugs for your bathroom, select rugs that have a rubber backing that will grip to the floor, helping to prevent any slips and falls in the room. If the rugs you have selected do not have a rubber backing, there are other options available. For a few dollars more, purchase a rug pad. A rug pad can easily be cut to size to fit under your rug. A less expensive option that is available is rug tape. Rug tape can be applied to both ends of your rug, ensuring that it will not slip on your floor when you walk across it. One final room of bathroom safety is cleanliness. A clean bathroom is both a safe and healthy bathroom for all to enjoy. If you dread the idea of spending precious hours of your weekend scrubbing away, purchase a daily shower spray to use. Today there are many cleaning products available that help cut down the need for a full on cleaning of the room every week. By spending a few seconds a day spraying down the shower area with a shower spray, you are killing thousands of bacteria and germs. The end product: a cleaner and healthier room. |
