Showerheads: Giving Your Old Shower More Power
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
There’s nothing better after a stressful day than to let your worries literally wash away during a soothing shower. There’s nothing worse than trying to take a steamy shower and being confronted with hard-to-turn shower knobs, low water pressure or inconsistent, inexplicable temperature changes. It’s time to give yourself the shower you deserve! Follow these guidelines and you’ll soon be enjoying that calming sensation of a powerful, relaxing shower. Know What You’ve Got Take stock of your current shower stall and bath tub. Note any areas you or your family members would like to change. Think both big and small; it’s easiest to renovate everything simultaneously. Check for rusted faucet fixtures, worm away caulking and storage space. Also turn on the water; look for leaks and changes in water pressure and temperature. Finally, view your room like an outsider. Does it feel welcoming and inviting? Are there extra accessories to provide safety and comfort such as bath mats, shower handle bars and spa pillows? Luxury Without the Price Tag Now that you’ve given your bathroom the once-over, it’s time to narrow down and decide the specifics of what you’d like to update. Tweaking a few minor details here and there can instantly boost your shower’s overall power and worth. Let’s start with the most important fixture: the bath showerhead. Whether your showerhead has been problematic or is functioning just fine, treat yourself to a newer design. The latest, cost efficient models include multiple showerheads, or overhead shower heads; these designs provide the feeling of showering underneath an exotic waterfall, allowing you to escape your busy life (however brief). Necessary Accessories It’s time to update other aspects of your shower and bath as well, especially if you haven’t redecorated in the last seven years. An easy way to instantly change up the style is to add entirely new tiling. For smaller budgets or busier homes, consider installing just a few accent tiles with bold colors and designs to add flair but cut down on cost. For storage purposes, consider adding wire shelving units inside the shower unit itself. Models range in heights and sizes, so even if you have a small amount of space, you’ll remain organized. Just think—no more domino effect with all the shampoo bottles! Similarly, if you have trouble regulating how much shampoo, conditioner and soap is used, install an automated stainless steel soap dispenser. These sleek, budget-friendly models are great for kids and help keep your shower organized! Finally, between work, household chores, errands and children, who has time to wait for the fog to clear? That’s why fog free mirrors are a great investment; they cut down on the time it takes to apply makeup or shave after showering with virtually no wait time. Invigorate All Your Senses While adjusting your shower knobs to create the right temperature and pressure, there are other elements to your bathroom that can enhance your shower—or otherwise— daily experiences. First, the lighting should match your mood. Chances are, you probably have an overhead light fixture. Track lighting above your mirrors or even around your shower instantly adds an element of sophistication. Also, by installing a dimmer switch, you can easily control the brightness; so on days when your head is pounding, you can allow soft light to sooth yourself while you shower. Similarly, what’s a good shower without some tunes? If you enjoy belting out ballads while you soap up, purchase a waterproof FM/AM radio or CD set. Most designs include plastic suction cups, so you won’t have to worry about it falling or installing in permanently. Last but not least, your shower and bathroom should smell fresh and clean—no matter what. While disinfectant sprays certainly “smell”, oftentimes, they are overwhelming and simply mask odors instead of eliminating them. Instead, try placing a few tea lights in scents such as vanilla, lavender, chamomile or citrus.
