The Expanding Kitchen
By Amanda Bashore of Your Home Supply
Your kitchen is the hub of your home. It functions as a nearly professional cooking area, a homework station, a makeshift battleground for children as well as a gathering place for family and friends. Like any room, however, your kitchen may need to be remodeling to accommodate the ever-changing needs of your family. Create Enough Space Your kitchen’s design may not currently offer enough space for your family. Consider the common traffic patterns; do guests or kids continually squirm between chairs, is there something blocking a doorway? If your kitchen features an island countertop, adjusting it a few inches may be just enough space you need. Upgrade Your Appliances The single-rack oven once worked for your family, but may be difficult to cook for a family of five or for throwing a festive party. Nowadays, stainless steel appliances are becoming more commonplace, and therefore less expensive. The stainless steel will not only match any kitchen design, but also make your kitchen resemble a professional chef’s own kitchen. If replacing your appliances is too costly, considering re-facing your appliance. By simple repainting or changing your dish washer, stove and refrigerator panels, you can easily redesign your kitchen. Redesign Your Cabinets It’s not uncommon for most kitchens to feature plain, neutral cabinetry. But as your family and home changes over time, so too should your cabinets. For smaller budgets, simply replacing your existing door knobs and locksets quickly transforms the feel of your cabinets. Light finishes, such as brass, chrome, or satin nickel cabinet knobs easily “dress up” your existing cabinetry. Additional satin nickel cabinet hardware includes drawer pulls and hinges so your knobs will match other smaller hardware pieces as well. For a bolder look, add dark knobs in oil rubbed bronze, Swedish iron or matte black or brown. If you’re ready to consider replacing your cabinet pieces altogether, opt for darker finishes. Many homes choose 3 levels of finishes: light for eye-level cabinets, medium tones for waist-level cabinets and finally the darkest finishes that are for floor-level cabinets. This tiered system of finishes adds a unique flair to any kitchen, modern or traditional. Use What You’ve Got What many homeowners do not consider is that you can change your kitchen to meet your needs without heading to any stores. Look around to see what you can use. Some homes remove cabinet doors on eye-level cabinets to create open shelves and used the doors as additional shelving units. Bask in the Limelight If you feel as though your kitchen lacks a focus, create one. By installing track lighting that directs attention to decorative hanging pots or even a simple granite countertop, you can easily direct attention to an area you’re proud of. Similarly, interior lighting in cabinets is a quick and easy way to finally show off your China pattern or antique you picked up on one of your family vacations. Add Flair the Easy Way Entirely repainting your kitchen a bold red or tiling your walls with cats may seem extreme; but if you like the concept, downsize it to fit the feel of your kitchen. If you enjoy bright colors, create an accent wall with a rich paint. To show off your passions, add a border throughout your kitchen of whatever you like (animals, instruments et cetera). Create an Illusion Though your kitchen measurements may be large, any kitchen can feel smaller if it’s cluttered or over-styled. Create the illusion of having a never-ending kitchen by using light and mirrors. Windows to the outdoors or other areas of the home give off the feeling that the kitchen extends beyond the actual dimensions of the room. Likewise, mirrors help create the feeling of extra space by reflecting light. For a powerful punch, use both mirrors and light (natural or store-bought) to your advantage and your kitchen will seem larger. . |
